The setting of this story takes place in Yoknapatawpha county, Mississippi. The plot of the story is based around a dying mother named Addie and her family consisting on her husband and her five children. After she died, her family decided to take the long trek to the central county of the town, Jefferson. Along the way they face many issues from a broken leg, a failed abortion, a burning barn, to a lost appendage. Addie's coffin barely made it there but eventually when they get to Jefferson, her husband Anse buries her and finds a new "Mrs. Bundren." The weird part of the story is that the whole time, there are a total of 15 different narrators throughout. Faulkner also spaced the whole story over fifty-nine exerpts just to add complexity to the story. Clearly, Faulkner didn't have to make Mississippi the setting but he decided to and it creates a stereotype during the story of southern residents. It also made him create the character's qualities based on residents of his hometown in Yoknapatawpha.
