A Rose For Emily

This story takes place in Jefferson, Mississippi, with the character Emily Grierson. It is taken from the point of view of the community citizens. Her father was a very good man so the town decided to exempt her from taxes forever. She is growing older and the town is challenging the exemption while she ignores it. She stays home most of the day with her servant, but meets a Northern construction worker named Homer Barron and they spend a great deal of time together. Emily is seen at the drug store buying arsenic and doesn't give a reason for buying it. She eventually dies and the towns holds a funeral for her. After Emily's death and an investigation of the house, a secret room is found with Homer's decaying body. On the pillow next to his body there was an indentation and a grey hair of Ms. Emily Grierson. The story is organized is in 5 sections, but they are not in order, so this adds confusion to the story. The story that takes place in the south, in "A Rose for Emily," allows Faulkner to make a servant for Emily in the story. This story is post Civil War but there were still servants in the South at the time. Since William lived in the county the story's setting is based off of, he can make the events in the story as realistic as they can get.
